Abstract

|
Bochdalek hernia is the most common and serious form of the congital diaphragmatic hernia. It is one of the most urgent of neonatal surgical emergencies, causing fatal respiratory distress.
The onset of symptoms is related to the severity of the disease. The most severely affected babies show respiratory .distress at birth. Others develop increasing respiratory difficulty within several hours to several days, with cyanosis, tachypnea and retraction. When lung is not markedly compressed, symptoms are minimal and occur in childhood or in adult. Diagnosis usually is made by chest roentgenogram. Vigorous respiratory support is necessary in patient with respiratory distress and, most of all, early operative correction is critical component of treatment.
Over a 5 year period from 1978 to 1982, operations were performed upon three infants with Bochdalek hernia at Kwangju Christian Hospital.
